This route is for migrants aged 16 or over who wish to study in the UK at an institution that is not an academy or a school maintained by a local authority.
Seeking Entry Clearance
All migrants arriving in the UK and wishing to enter as Tier 4 General Students must have a valid Entry Clearance for entry under this route. If they do not have valid entry under this route, entry will be refused.
Requirements for Entry Clearance
The following requirements must be met:-
- The Applicant must not fall for a refusal under the general grounds for refusal.
- The Applicant must have a minimum of 30 points under Paragraphs 113 to 120 of Appendix A
- The Applicant must have a minimum of 10 points under Paragraphs 10 to 14 of Appendix C
Ca. The Applicant must if required to do so on examination or interview be able to demonstrate without the assistance of an interpreter English language proficiency of a standard to be expected from an individual who has reached the standards specified in a Confirmation of Acceptance for studies assigned in accordance with Appendix A Paragraph 118 (b)
Da. If the Applicant wishes to undertake a course (undergraduate or postgraduate studies leading to a doctorate on Master’s Degree, undergraduate or postgraduate studies leading to a taught Master’s Degree or a period of study or research in excess of 6 months in one of disciplines listed in paragraphs 1 or 2 of Appendix 6 of the Rules
The Applicant must hold a valid Academic Technology Approval Scheme Clearance Certificate from the Counter Proliferation Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth office which relates to the course, or area of research that the Applicant will be taking at the institution of which the Applicant wishes to undertake it and provide a printout of his Academic Technology Approval Scheme Clearance Certificate to show that the requirements have been met.

Periods and Conditions of Grant of Leave
The period of leave will be dictated by the type and duration of course:-
12 months or more- leave granted 1 month before the course will start or seven days before the date of travel and leave will be granted for 4 months after the course has been completed
6 months or more but less than 12 months- one month leave will be granted before the course starts or seven days before the intended date of travel and leave will be granted for 2 months after the course has been completed
Type of course or pre-sessional course of less than 6 months and leave will be granted for 1 month before the course starts or seven months before the intended date of travel and leave will end 1 month after the course has been completed
Course of less than 6 months that is not a pre-sessional course- leave will be granted seven days before the course starts and will end seven days after the course has been completed
Postgraduate doctor or dentist- leave will be granted 1 month before the intended date of travel and for 1 month after the course has been completed.
There are clear conditions attached with regards to employment for students and this will be set out on their endorsement.
Students must not be in breach of these conditions.
This route is for children at least 4 years old and under the age of 18 who wish to be educated in the UK at an independent school. Academies and schools maintained by a local authority are not permitted to sponsor students under this route.
